Our Parks

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park

Here, in the nation’s first undersea park, visitors can explore 70 square nautical miles of crystal blue ocean. Take a boat ride out from the park marina and snorkel, or dive, at coral reefs teeming with sea life. For those who prefer to stay dry, a glass bottom boat sails daily to the reef as well.

On the land side, visitors can walk through hammock trails, relax on one of two beaches, picnic in a pavilion, do a little light fishing, or stay overnight in the campground.

For a unique experience, explore the park by kayaking. Miles of winding mangrove trails provide an up-close look at the subtropical plants, fish, and shore birds that live here.

The Visitors Center houses a large aquarium and exhibits on local fish, wildlife and history.

The park also has a boat launch ramp, snack bar, gift shop, and kayak and canoe rentals.

Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park

Rescued from expansive development, this park is home to one of the largest remaining tracts of rockland hammock in the world. Visitors can walk or bike through over six miles of trails lined with rare and protected flora, such as wild cotton, West Indian mahogany, and Keys thatch palm. Along the trails you may happen upon beautiful butterflies, curious raccoons, or tree snails climbing the tropical trees. It is also a great spot for bird watching during migration season, although elusive birds like the white-crowned pigeon may be found year-round.

You Can Help!

Be a friend of the parks today!

The Friends of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park was formed to generate and employ resources to support the recreation and conservation efforts of two of the state parks in the upper Florida Keys. We do this through events and activities, special work projects, outreach programs, educational activities and communications, and through fund raising activities such as memberships, donations, and grants to seek additional funds to augment the state parks’ existing funding to maintain, enhance, and expand the parks’ services to the public and the conservation of the natural areas of the two parks.
