SUMMARY:Outdoor Education's Impact on Ocean Conservation (August Delicate Balance of Nature)
DESCRIPTION:Education is powerful. Sarah has witnessed first hand the impact of MarineLab’s experiential education programs on the thousands of students who visit each year. Over time\, MarineLab has collected stories\, data and teacher insight on how student’s experiences out of the classroom have changed the trajectory of their futures\, creating paths that directly impact our environment. We are excited to share how outdoor education specifically can be a powerful tool to combat the threats our oceans face.\n\nSarah Egner is the Senior Vice President at MarineLab\, an environmental education center based in Key Largo. She has been with the organization since 2007\, serving in various capacities over the years including educator\, Captain\, curriculum developer and teacher trainer. In her current role\, she oversees all aspects of the MarineLab education program and is incredibly proud of the impact the organization has on students throughout the country and on the habitat that she loves the most – our ocean. After living in the Keys for 20 years\, Sarah works remotely from St Augustine with her family.\n\nJoin us in person in the John Pennekamp Visitor Center at 6:30pm for a pre-lecture reception or via Zoom at 7:15pm: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82435222102

SUMMARY:History of the Dive Museum- September Delicate Balance of Nature
DESCRIPTION:During her medical career\, Dr. Sally Bauer\, along with her husband Dr. Joe Bauer\, became avid SCUBA divers. During a layover in Miami\, they purchased their first diving helmet which inspired them to learn the history of diving before the development of SCUBA. Their discoveries led to a vast collection of knowledge and artifacts now housed in the History of Diving Museum which they founded. \nJoin us in person in the John Pennekamp Visitor Center at 6:30pm for a pre-lecture reception or via Zoom at 7:15pm: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85479535932

SUMMARY:Snakes of the Florida Keys - October Delicate Balance of Nature
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will cover all things snakes! I will discuss cultural significance of snakes\, dispelling myths\, and detail the importance of snakes in the ecosystem. I will also help with identification of the more common snakes and highlight current conservation issues affecting these animals with a focus on the federally threatened Eastern Indigo Snake and the invasive Burmese Python.\nMatt grew up in Birmingham\, Alabama. His passion for the natural world and scientific inquiry led him to obtain a degree in zoology from Auburn University and a master’s in environmental science from Florida Gulf Coast University. He has worked on a variety of environmental topics ranging from seagrass ecology to endangered bat conservation\, however\, his passion has always centered around reptiles. His expertise is focused on the conservation of native Florida snakes\, such as the Eastern Indigo Snake and Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake\, but he has also spent significant time conducting research on amphibian and reptile communities in the Peruvian Amazon. His studies have now landed him in Key Largo\, where he works as a biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey conducting research on Burmese Pythons throughout South Florida.\nJoin us in person in the John Pennekamp Visitor Center at 6:30pm for a pre-lecture reception or via Zoom at 7:15pm: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81856782929
